In 1750 AD the treaty of Sangola took place between Rajaram II and Peshwas, under which all the important powers were subordinated to the Peshwas and the peshwa emerged as the real and effective head of the Maratha- confederacy (Scindia of Gwalior, Goekwad of Baroda, Bhonsle of Nagpur, Holkers at Indore & Peshwas of Poona) and Rajaram was made nominal Chhatrapati. After the treaty of Sangola Peshwa became the most powerful and the real ruler. Shahu’s successors had no real power. Various Maratha Sardars emerged during this period. They were under the Peshwa.
