A retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India was established on 12th October, 1993. The statue under which it is established is the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993 as amended by the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2006. Therefore National Human Rights Commission is a Statuary body. The National Human Rights Commission is in conformity with the ‘Paris Principles’ for the promotion and protection of human rights, which was endorsed by General Assembly of United Nations in 1991. The National Human Rights Commission consists of a Chairperson, four full-time members and four deemed members. The Chairperson is a retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Among the four full time members, one member who is or has been a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, one member who is or has been the Chief Justice of a High Court, two members from amongst persons having knowledge of or practical experience in matters relating to human rights. Deemed members are Chairpersons of the National Commission for Minorities, National Commission for Scheduled Castes, National Commission for Scheduled Tribes and National Commission for Women.
