The major reasons for it being drought prone are as follows: (1) Cold currents off the west coast (little evaporation to form rain clouds) (2) Great Dividing Range (running down the east coast prevents rain from penetrating far inland). (3) Few mountains to force air upwards where it can cool into rain but the region being dominated by the sub-tropical high pressure belt, that warms and dries the air. (4) El-Nino- Southern Oscillation. (5) Overgrazing and Ground water sources ( aquifers) depletion.
