The polio virus enters the body through the mouth, usually from hands contaminated with the stool of an infected person. Polio is more common in infants and young children and occurs under conditions of poor hygiene. Polio is spread when the stool of an infected person is introduced into the mouth of another person through contaminated water or food (fecal-oral transmission). Poliovirus is very contagious and spreads through person-to-person contact. It lives in an infected person’s throat and intestines. Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) given as an injection in the leg or arm, depending on the patient’s age and Oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) is still used throughout most of the world for prevention of Polio.
