Directive Principle's of State Policy. Welfare State is a concept of governance in which the State plays a key role in the protection and promotion of economic and social well-being of its citizens. It is based on the principles of equality of opportunity and equitable distribution of wealth. It also focuses on the governmental responsibility for those who are unable to avail themselves of the minimal provisions of a good life. Under this system, the welfare of its citizens is the responsibility of the State. The Constitution of India lays down certain Directive Principles of State Policy [Part IV (Article 36 to 51)] which, though not Justiciable but are “Fundamental in governance of the country” and it is the duty of the State to apply these principles in making laws. Directive Principles lay down that the State shall strive to promote the welfare of people by securing and protecting as effectively as it may, a social order in which justice; social, economic and political shall form in all institutions of national life. The concept of Directive Principle of State Policy has been borrowed from Irish Constitution.
