July1947. The Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the ‘Indian Independence Act’ 1947, which was later sanctioned by the British crown on July 18, 1947. The Act was one of the final formalities that had to be completed before the inevitable split of British India. This split gave rise to Pakistan on August 14 and to the dominion of India on August 15. This Act was the direct result of the ‘3rd June Plan,’ which was proposed by then Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten.
