24 Jan. 1950. The Constitution Assembly of India was elected by the Provincial Assemblies in the year 1946. Except Mahatma Gandhi and M.A.Jinnah, all the prominent political leaders of that time were members of the Constituent Assembly. The First Session of the Constituent Assembly of India was held on December 09, 1946. Two hundred and seven representatives, including nine women were present at the inaugural session. Its temporary President was Dr.Sacchidanand Sinha.The second meeting of Constituent Assembly was held on 11th December, 1946. Its President was Dr.Rajendra Prasad. The Constitution of India was adopted on 26th November, 1949 and the members appended their signatures to it on the last meeting of the Constituent Assembly on 24th January, 1950. In all, 284 members actually signed the Constitution. The Constitution of India came to force on 26th January, 1950.
