Commonwealth, also called Common-wealth of Nations is a free association of Sovereign States comprising United Kingdom and a number of its former dependencies, who have chosen to maintain ties of friendship and practical cooperation. These nations acknowledge the British monarch as symbolic head of their association. India is a member of Commonwealth nations since 1947. The word “Sovereign” means that State has the power to legislate on any subject in conformity with Constitutional limitations. India is internally and externally sovereign i.e. externally free from the control of any foreign power and internally, it has a Government which is directly elected by the people and makes laws that govern the people. No external power can dictate the Government of India. So the membership of Commonwealth nations does not put the sovereignty of India at stake.
