Watson and Crick. DNA stands for Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid. It was first identified in the late 1860s by Swiss chemist Friedrich Miescher. He named it "nuclein". In 1881, Albrecht Kossel identified nuclein as a nucleic acid and provided its present chemical name, Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Between 1885 and 1901, Albrecht Kossel discovered that these acids were composed of four nitrogen bases: adenine, cytosine, guanine and thymine. He received Noble Prize for Physiology or Medicine for this work in the year 1910. Double-helix structure of DNA was propounded by James Watson and Francis Crick in the year 1953. In 1962, Watson , Crick , and Wilkins jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for determination of the structure of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).
